How to change the PHP version and edit php.ini settings

June 07, 2026 Web Hosting and Control Panels (cPanel)

Different websites and content management systems (like WordPress plugins or custom PHP scripts) require different versions of PHP and specific server configurations to work properly.

At CeylonServers, you can easily change your PHP version and optimize your php.ini variables (such as increasing memory limits or upload sizes) directly from your cPanel.

Section 1: How to Change Your PHP Version using MultiPHP Manager

Using the MultiPHP Manager is the fastest and most reliable way to assign specific PHP versions to individual domains or subdomains.

  • Log in to your cPanel dashboard directly.
  • Go to the search bar at the top, type "MultiPHP Manager", and click on the icon under the Software section.

  • Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the list of your domains and subdomains.
  • Select Your Domain: Click the checkbox on the left side of the specific domain name you want to change.
  • Choose PHP Version: Go to the top right side of the list where it says "PHP Version" and click the dropdown menu. Select your desired version (e.g., PHP 8.1, PHP 8.2, or PHP 8.3).

  • Apply Changes: Click the blue "Apply" button. A green success message will appear at the top right, confirming your domain has been updated to the new PHP version instantly.

Note: If your hosting layout uses "MultiPHP Manager" instead, simply open that tool, select the checkbox next to your domain, choose the PHP version from the dropdown menu on the right, and click Apply.

Section 2: How to Edit php.ini Settings (Increase Upload & Memory Limits)

If your website shows errors like "The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive" or out-of-memory bugs, you need to increase your values.

Method A: Using "Select PHP Version" (Recommended)

Using "MultiPHP INI Editor".

  • Go back to the cPanel home screen and search for "MultiPHP INI Editor".
  • Under the Basic Mode tab, select your domain name from the dropdown menu.
  • Locate the settings you want to modify (e.g., upload_max_filesize, memory_limit), type the new values, and click the blue "Apply" button at the bottom.

Important Tips for Users:

  • Check Compatibility: Before upgrading to the latest PHP version (like PHP 8.3), ensure your website themes and plugins are fully updated and compatible to avoid any temporary site downtime.
  • Instant Changes: These adjustments take effect globally across your site within seconds. There is no need to restart the server.
